NICU - Day 47

Date: January 8th (Happy Birthday Uncle Matt!)
Gestational Age: 34 weeks 5 days
Weight: 1975 grams

Today is our 100th blog post! I wish that it had been a less eventful day however.

For our 100th post, Maddie wanted to blow you all a kiss!

Madelyn had 4 spells today. FOUR. The nurse called to give me an update this afternoon and told me this and mentioned that one was right after her eye exam so I asked her to look up the results of the eye exam. They informed me that her eyes were Zone 2 and one was Stage 1 and the other Stage 2. As a result, Maddie went back on the RAM cannula. Apparently, her normal level of oxygen is not enough to get her eyes completely developed. We are unsure of how much longer she will be on the cannula but she is starting to show more activity and mobility. She was more feisty than she has been in a few days. I take that as a sign that the increase in oxygen is helping. Tonight she was getting antsy and even cried, which barely ever happens. Her heart rate was also high (180s) but we re-positioned her and tried to get her hands near her face and her body as swaddled as possible in her donut. That helped her heart rate to go down and she fell back asleep. She also managed to pull off her ostomy bag tonight. When they went to re-feed her milk into her lower intestines at 10 pm (after getting a new bag put on), she kept trying to push the catheter out. Despite the amount of trauma her body has been through, she can push that catheter out like a champion to the disdain of her nurses. Maddie did have a little poop overnight last night. It was one tiny turd, but it still counts. We were proud.

Tonight we also cuddled skin-to-skin. We had originally just tried me holding her but she was super antsy. Once we took off her outfit and slid her into my shirt, she was completely calm and fell asleep. We sat like that for over an hour. It was great.

Happy Birthday Uncle Matt!
