NICU - Day 53

Date: January 14th
Gestational Age: 35 weeks 5 days
Weight: 2155 grams

Madelyn had a good day today. No big changes to her care. She slept most of the day but woke up when I changed her diaper and the nurse emptied her ostomy bag. Her surgery has been penciled in for January 27th. At that time, they will re-attach her intestines so they are all in one piece and also put the central line in her chest.

Her onesie says, "I adore Mommy"

I attended NICU parents group today and we worked on Beads for Bravery. It is the first time they are doing it in the NICU, but they have been doing it in the Children's Hospital for several years. One of the beads is a Loras College one! Loras College Dance Marathon sponsors the Beads for Bravery program apparently. Maddie also gets a bead for every surgery, ultrasound, x-ray, iv, blood transfusion, and one bead per week for blood draws. She also got one for her ostomy and wound vac. She has a lot of beads already, despite only being 53 days old. Maddie will continue to receive beads throughout this stay and any additional she has at the University of Iowa.

Waiting to be weighed.

After the parents' group, I went over to Mother-Baby and Labor and Delivery to visit with Linda, the nurses, Lastascia, and doctors Hunter and Swanson. I was able to show them pictures of Maddie and Baby Walter on my phone. Everyone was impressed with how big they both are.
